Long before the lights dim, the process begins. The Art of Rehearsal is a place to think quietly about the art and craft of rehearsal - the real work of music-making. Art of Rehearsal is a monthly newsletter filled with brief ideas to upgrade your rehearsal process and tackle the fine art of musical problem-solving.
My name is Jordan, I’m a conductor, teacher, writer, and coach, and I’m fascinated by the connections between music, the people who make it, and the process to put it all together.
The Art of Rehearsal will serve to share a few types of information:
Rehearsal Tactics that you can put to use right away.
Useful quotes and principles from a great musician, teacher, or scholar of music.
Recent Essays on rehearsal from me over the past month, with an idea or two highlighted.
Rehearsal Around the Web: Any time there is something for musicians to read, watch, or consider in rehearsal effectiveness, or particularly relevant news, I’ll include that as well. With so many good websites, newsletters, podcasts, and YouTube channels, there will always be something you can use.
Books and More: I’ll share what I’m reading, which ensemble I’m watching, and the conductors I’m talking to, and relate it all to what I’m learning about the rehearsal process.
Music: Lastly, great music, with real humans working on real music always remains at the core of it all. I’ll include some exciting music making and a great example of effective rehearsal leadership in the form of a video or two.
Welcome!

Weekly Reads
Also, on most Thursdays, I publish an essay at The Conductor’s Notebook. The Art of Rehearsal will not duplicate that effort, and you can learn more here and subscribe using this link.
